For Interstellar, Christopher Nolan did not want to CGI the farm scenes. So, he purchased a plot of land and planted 500 acres of corn just for the film. After filming, he sold the corn and made back a profit on the land purchase. This was one of the smartest financial decisions from a director or producer for a movie.
